The president earlier wrote to Mkhwebane to notify her of his intention to suspend her amid a parliamentary inquiry into her competence.

In the letter, Ramaphosa asked the public protector to provide him with reasons why she should not be suspended.

Mkhwebane subsequently turned to the courts to challenge her looming suspension as well as the impeachment proceedings in Parliament.

“The president made this request to the Public Protector in March 2022 following confirmation from the Speaker of the National Assembly that the Section 194 Committee had resolved to continue with its consideration of the motion for the removal of the public protector,” the presidency said in a statement on Friday.

Ramaphosa will now consider the representations before making a decision on Mkhwebane’s possible suspension.
