Rand Water: Taps could run dry if water use is not cut
Updated | By Emile Pienaar
Rand Water released a statement urging residents of Gauteng to cut their water usage immediately before bulk storage is depleted.

This comes after the city of Tshwane implemented water restriction Level 1, due to excessive water use and demand.
The spokesperson for Rand Water, Makenosi Maroo, says they have advised municipalities to reduce their water consumption.
"Water storage levels through Gauteng province have significantly declined due to excessive water withdrawals by municipalities raising serious concerns," said Maroo.
"Rand Water has advised municipalities to reduce their physical losses of 33% identified in the No-Drop report and also advised municipalities to repair leaks, enforce by laws, and address illegal connections."
She said the only way to address this problem is by water conservation and demand management.
"Rand Water would like to alert communities particularly in Gauteng that water storage could soon be depleted if municipalities do not implement our recommendations. It is essential to act now to prevent the impending disaster."
"The water supply systems in Gauteng including Rand Water reservoirs are critically low and the situation is anticipated to worsen with the ongoing heat wave. Rand Water has repeatedly warned municipalities in Gauteng about this potential situation."
"We have communicated through letters, held meetings with many municipalities, and engaged in discussions at various forums. Unfortunately the situation we sought to prevent has now materialized. The water supply system in Gauteng is critically low."
