A total of 124 065 pupils are writing the English home language and 609 830 are writing English First Additional Language.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga visited Noordwyk Primary School in Midrand to monitor exam readiness.
She was accompanied by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
“On day one everyone is anxious and it just confirms what my colleagues in provinces have told me, that they are as ready as ready could be. I had to come here to see how ready we are as a system.
“I think we are ready to go and our kids are assuring us that they are ready to go. This is class which had it the most difficult. They are grade 11s of last year and they only came back in July, so in total, they had 40% of their grade 11,” said Motshekga.
The examination is expected to conclude in December.
In Gauteng, some 175 000 candidates will be sitting for exams.
Motshekga said while she is concerned about this class, they also received the best support from within government and private parties.
“I hope we will be able to sustain the outpouring support from government and the private sector. Teachers were also aware of the pressures this class experienced. I hope the support will be sustained because we have never had this much support.”
