The metro police in Johannesburg arrested a record 1101 motorists for drinking and driving in the month of August.
Metro police chief David Tembe said this compares to the 790 motorists who were arrested in July.
“I’m concerned Mr Mayor, it is the first time we have never reached 1000 - we have never arrested 1101 before,” Tembe told a media briefing on Thursday.

Tembe added it seems the more motorist are arrested for drinking and driving, the more they continue to drive under the influence of alcohol.
“It shows that the JMDP is visible, it is everywhere and we are catching them.”
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba said he believes drinking and driving is so prevalent because motorists believe they can get away with it.
“We won’t see any improvement for as long as there’s are no consequences for criminal activists, you can arrest 1000 to 2000. If ever we do not have serious consciousness for drunk and driving we have no chance of ever succeeding.”
