The Office of the Tax Ombud says it received over 4,600 complaints against the South African Revenue Service during the 2023/2024 financial year.
The Ombud released its annual report in collaboration with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday.
The number of complaints received in 2023/2024 increased by 16.49% (662 complaints) when compared to the previous financial year.
From the 4,600 complaints, the Ombud rejected over 1,300, terminated about 900, and accepted about 2,400.
The Ombud says 28% of the rejected complaints were due to complaints not falling within its mandate.
"Despite concerns about the non-binding nature of OTO recommendations, SARS has implemented about 99.77% of these recommendations,” the Ombud said.
"However, there is a need for timely implementation, and the OTO plans to use other mechanisms available in the Tax Administration Act to ensure timely implementation.
"The OTO continues to pursue systemic investigations to address widespread issues, including the increasing incidence of eFiling profile hijacking.”
