RFA: Root cause of mass vehicle pile-ups must be probed
The Road Freight Association says investigators need to identify the root causes of mass vehicle pile-ups, which seem to have become a common occurrence on our roads.
The group's Gavin Kelly has been commenting on Monday's crash on the N3 near Hilton, involving more than 40 cars, minibus taxis and trucks.
Five people were killed in the collision. The cause is being investigated.
"We cannot lose any more South Africans. We cannot have our roads becoming places of death," says Kelly.
"All South Africans need to use the roads carefully, sensibly and responsibly and especially when it is wet, when there is heavy misty conditions and when traffic volumes are high. We need to drive slower and driver with far more concentration and think about our actions."
Emergency teams say 78 patients with injuries ranging from minor to critical were transported to hospital.
Last month over 40 cars were mowed down by a truck on the M41 in Umhlanga when it lost control.
No one was killed.
