SABC proposing salary cuts, CWU claims
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) claims there was an attempt by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board to negotiate salary cuts during their meeting on Monday.
The public broadcaster and labour unions met on Monday to find alternative ways to the proposed retrenchments at the corporation.
The CWU and employees protested outside the SABC on Friday, calling on the management to abandon the retrenchment process.
They also want the board to find a different model to the one which will see about 400 employees lose their jobs.
The retrenchment process was suspended for seven days after unions threatened a full-blown strike.

"You can't cut something that does not exist. What is called salary of workers come at midnight, come quarter-to-12 it is already half, at half-past six in the morning it is quarter. By the time you rush to the ATM it is gone,” CWU general-secretary Aubrey Tshabalala says.
"So, what is it that you are cutting? Because during the month it is you borrowing grant money to go to work.”
No resolution was found and Tshabalala has now called on employees to tools down until negations are concluded.
"We think, over the weekend, they were so scared that they sent us a letter. On Monday when they realise that you guys are working they became brave again.
"So, the biggest enemy now is SABC workers. We spoke to musicians, political parties, civil society, everyone is behind SABC workers. It is only SABC workers themselves who are not behind their own programme.”
