SACP, EFF demand clarity on Mashatile alleged shooting

The South African Communist Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters have expressed concern over the alleged shooting of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's convoy last month.

Mashatile revealed on Easter Weekend that his motorcade was shot at last month on the N12 highway after attending an ANC meeting in Boksburg.
In a statement, the SACP said the alleged attack represents a direct attack on the democratic institutions and called on the police to swiftly arrest the suspects.
"The SACP expresses its deep concern about this reported attack and cautions against, among other possibilities, the degeneration of political life in our country into violence, lawlessness and bloodshed."
The EFF echoed the words of the SACP, saying an attack the deputy president is not only alarming but also poses a threat to national security.
The party said it is concerned by the silence from the Presidency and state security agencies regarding the details of the incident.
The Presidency is yet to issue a detailed statement on the alleged shooting.
The EFF further said the public has the right to be informed about threats to government leaders, irrespective of political affiliations.
"While internal dynamics within the African National Congress (ANC) may be complex due to extreme factionalism, the safety and security of our nation's leadership transcend partisan lines."
