SACP files papers at ConCourt to keep Janusz Walus behind bars

The South African Communist Party (SACP) says the party has filed papers at the Constitutional Court asking it to rescind the decision to release Janusz Walus on parole.
The ANC, SACP and its alliance partners marched to the Kgosi Mampuru prison on Pretoria on Wednesday in protest against the release of the man who shot and killed Chris Hani in 1993.
Walus’ release comes 10 days after the Constitutional Court ordered that he be released on parole by no later than Wednesday, 30 November.
The SACP’s general-secretary Solly Mapaila says the court papers were filed on Tuesday.
“We have taken legal action, our lawyers filed papers with the Constitutional Court, and the High Court, and also to the Minister of Correctional Services to indicate that we have taken the following steps and we want the stay of execution order until this matter is heard.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services’ spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says Walus is being monitored by the healthcare professionals.
Walus was attacked and stabbed by an inmate on Tuesday.
“He is being monitored by our healthcare professionals until such time that he is cleared of any form of danger. As a department we have to ensure that we leave nothing to chance,” says Nxumalo.
“The attacker has been segregated and will be charged criminally, because it is a criminal offence to stab and unleashed any form of attack to another inmate, or any other person for that matter.”
