Sadtu latest to call for Unisa to be put under administration
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Democratic Teachers Union has called for a criminal investigation at Unisa in the wake of a damning report into gross maladministration at the institution.
An independent assessor highlighted, among other things, a culture of intimidation at the distance learning institution, bullying, tender manipulation and the abuse of funds.
The 309-page report has been submitted to the Department of Higher Education and Training.
A startling finding was that Unisa paid R8 000 for lessons on how to use a vacuum cleaner for its vice-chancellor.
R285 000 was spent on curtains for her home. There was also an R1 million kitchen renovation bill.
Sadtu's Nomusa Cembi says Unisa should be placed under administration immediately.
"We call on the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology [Blade Nzimande] to take decisive action and to approach the law enforcement agencies to conduct further investigations where criminal conduct is identified.
"We feel that at the end of the day that will have an impact on the university's ability to register more students into the institution and there will be less money."
