SAHRC to probe racism at Klipspruit-West
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
The Gauteng Education Department is meeting with education union SADTU regarding the situation at the Klipspruit West Secondary School, south of Johannesburg.
Educators from the union have withdrawn from various schools in the south, complaining of racism.
The meeting is expected to take place on Tuesday.
"30 schools are affected which means more than 200 teachers will not be at school. We cannot afford it during this period" says GDE spokesman Steve Mabona.
The Soweto-based high school made headlines earlier this year after a violent racial protest erupted over the hiring of a black principal in July.
It has been reported that the largely coloured community wanted a coloured candidate to take over as a principal.
The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga is still reviewing the process that led to the appointment of the principal.
"The Human Rights Commission will hold public hearing into allegations of racism in the school. The Commission will announce the dates and processes of the public hearings. The firm Ernst & Young has been appointed and commenced with the forensic investigation into alleged financial irregularities and governance related matters says Mabona.
Due to the impending final NSC exams the department has since withdrawn all Grade 12 learners from the school.
Alternative arrangements have been made for the learners to attend a camp until they write their final exams.
