National police commissioner Fannie Masemola on Thursday deployed SAPS' task team responsible for investigating political killings to KwaZulu-Natal.
The task team was deployed to the Nongoma area following the killing of an IFP councillor on the R618 on Wednesday.
Recently, Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that some 52 councillors have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal since 2011.
In 2016, government set up the Moerane Commission to probe the underlying causes of political violence in KZN.
The commission found that there were serious weaknesses in the criminal justice system as well as national intelligence.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said maximum resources have been mobilised to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.
“A preliminary investigation indicates the IFP ward councillor who is attached to Nongoma Local Municipality was ambushed along the R618 in Nongoma while attending to a vehicle breakdown on Wednesday afternoon.
“A group of armed men stopped next to his vehicle and shot the councillor multiples times, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
“The suspects then fired shots at a passing scholar transport taxi that was transporting school children."
One child was killed and three others wounded.
