The South African Reserve Bank has upgraded the country’s banknotes and coins with enhanced security features and new designs.
These include the South African flag, the preamble of the Constitution in micro-lettering and the Big 5 depicted as a family.
The 10c coin features the Cape honeybee, which replaces the Arum Lily flower, and the 20c features the bitter aloe.
The aloe replaces the country’s national flower the King Protea.
The 50 cents features the Knysna turaco, also known as a Knysna Lourie in Afrikaans, replacing the Strelitzia.
The R1 features the king protea which replaces the national animal Springbok which replaces the Kudu 'King of Antelope' on the R2 coin.
The R5 denomination features the southern right whale, which replaces the Black Wildebeest.
SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago says all banknotes and coins issued before by the SARB remain legal tender in South Africa.
"I want to emphasize that the upgraded bank notes, and coins will have the same value as the same notes and coins in circulation. I want to encourage the public to transact with them. Both sets of currency will remain legal tender into the future.”
The new coins and notes will start circulating on Thursday.
