Fifteen former Sibanye Stillwater mineworkers have been sentenced to ten years in prison for stealing gold ore at the Driefontein mine, in Carletonville.
The accused were also convicted of illegal possession and transportation of unwrought precious metals.
They were sentenced by the Oberholzer Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
In August 2013, the accused were allegedly involved in the theft and refining of gold bearing material at the metallurgical plant Sibanye Stillwater in Driefontein until June 2014.
The company installed hidden cameras as part of a sting operation and investigations led to the arrest of the employees.
"The gold bearing material stolen was estimated to be worth over R2 million, all accused were later granted bail of between R15 000 and R20 000 in June 2014," said Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Thatohatsi Mavimbela.
Mavimbela said a warrant of arrest has been issued for accused number (3) Keogotsitse Wadikgomo (58).
