Simelane: Govt ‘committed’ to ensure justice for Marikana victims
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Department of Justice confirmed on Friday that R352 million had been disbursed to families affected by the Marikana massacre.
The update came on the 12th anniversary of the tragedy, where 34 people were killed and 78 injured at the Lonmin platinum mine near Rustenburg in the North West.
In the run-up to 16 August 2012, ten people, including two policemen and two security guards, were killed.
The miners had embarked on an unprotected strike to demand a wage of R12,500 a month.
Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Thembi Simelane said the government is committed to concluding all litigation and reparation matters arising from the deadly wage strike.
Simelane said cases have been assessed individually to ensure that compensations align with the framework and court directives.
“We have resolved most aspects of the Marikana matter with the exception of the constitutional damages, which are currently under consideration by the Gauteng High Court, and we remain committed to finalising this matter and ensuring that justice is served.”
