Soweto child dies from suspected food poisoning

A five-year-old child from Diepkloof, Soweto, passed away overnight after reportedly consuming snacks from a local spaza shop.

Gauteng police have confirmed the incident and stated that they are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
According to reports, the child was vomiting and had a runny stomach before being taken to a local clinic where he was declared dead.
This follows numerous child deaths linked to foodborne illnesses, suspected to be caused by food poisoning.
In October, six young children passed away in Naledi in Soweto, after also consuming snacks bought at a local shop.
Earlier this month, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed that the province reported 23 fatalities and 441 incidents relating to foodborne illnesses.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has subsequently announced various measures and new regulations to address the outbreaks in several provinces.
