Standing ovation as Motlanthe quotes Kathrada asking Zuma to 'step down'
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Former president Kgalema Motlanthe received a standing ovation when he quoted the letter by struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada, calling on President Jacob Zuma to resign.
Motlanthe delivered the eulogy at Kathrada's funeral at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
"As you are aware, his letter went without any formal reply. I've quoted Comrade Kathy at length in this regard to make the point that for better or for worse, what he stood for never changed according to the fluidities of history," said Mothlanthe.
Motlanthe quoted the letter in front of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe as well as former president Thabo Mbeki.
Pravin Gordhan was also in attendance, amid speculation of an imminent cabinet reshuffle that will see him axed.
The director at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton, asked Gordhan to stand up and said to the minister "you remain true to the values and principles that Kathrada would be proud of".
Gordhan also received a standing ovation.
President Zuma is not attending Kathrada's funeral, saying he is staying away in line with the family's wishes.
