State of City Power distribution ‘a disaster’

An energy expert says the power outages affecting large parts of Johannesburg comes as no surprise, given the state of City Power.

The power utility has been battling to restore numerous outages caused by outdated infrastructure.
The Joburg said on Monday that is had been dealing with around 3,000 outage calls daily.
Independent energy expert Tshepo Kgadima doesn’t believe the city’s residents will see an improvement in the power supply anytime soon.
“City Power’s outages will go on for a long time. They take electricity users’ money and allocate it to other things instead of maintaining or refurbishing their infrastructure.
“City Power is a distributor, but its state of distribution is a disaster.”
However, in a statement on Monday, City Power said they were making significant progress in addressing the surge in power outages.
“While we acknowledge that some customers are still affected, we have successfully resolved many power interruptions that occurred over the past few days.
“To address the ongoing challenges, we have brought in additional resources over the weekend, and with the start of the new week, more technicians and contractors who were on break have returned, ensuring that all operational teams are fully staffed.”
