State to oppose bail for Benoni, Tembisa ‘serial rapist’

The State will oppose any possible bail application brought by an alleged serial rapist who terrorised residents of Benoni and Tembisa.
The 38 year-old man, who is facing a total of 145 charges, briefly appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The accused, who cannot be named as he is yet to plead, is facing 44 charges of rape, 43 charges of kidnapping in addition to 41 counts of pointing a firearm.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Gauteng Lumka Mahanjana said they believe the man’s reign of terror lasted several years.

It has not yet been established when his alleged crimes began..
He was arrested in January following an alleged rape in Putfontein.
The NPA claims the man’s victim was waiting for a taxi to take her to work when he offered to give her a lift is his car.
When she refused, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at her, forced her into the car, and eventually rape her.
The matter will be back in court on 10 May for a formal bail hearing.
