Steenhuisen warns of ANC-EFF 'doomsday coalition'

DA leader John Steenhuisen says keeping an ANC and EFF coalition out of the Union Buildings is his party's top priority as the country gears up for next year's elections.

Steenhuisen delivered his victory speech the DA'a national congress in Midrand on Sunday - after a resounding win against Mpho Phalatse for the position as party leader.

He will lead the party for the next three years, with his first big test being the 2024 national and provincial elections.

Steenhuisen, who become interim party leader in November 2019 following the resignation of Mmusi Maimane, took the top job on a permanent basis at a virtual congress during the Covid pandemic in November 2020.

Steenhuisen told delegates on Sunday that the EFF is the DA's number one political enemy.

"Given the fact that the ANC now officially co-governs with the EFF in parts of Gauteng, we need to start taking the threat of these parties ganging up to destroy our country in 2024 very, very seriously," he said.

"I want to be unequivocal about the DA’s view on this: the day that an ANC-EFF government takes over, it will be doomsday for South Africa.

"EFF doomsday will make the collapse of Zimbabwe look like a dress-rehearsal, and will leave all South Africans destitute – black, coloured, white and Indian.

"That is why, during the remaining months before next year’s election, the DA will make it our number one priority – and do absolutely everything in our power – to prevent an 'ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition' from taking power," added Steenhuisen.

Steenhuisen warned that a coalition between the ANC and EFF coalition will be knocking on the doors of the Union Buildings next year.

"This is a fact that should send shivers down the spines of every patriot and freedom-loving person in this country.

"But fortunately there is one, and only one, insurance policy against the 'ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition'. And that is to vote for the Democratic Alliance.

"Because the DA is the only party that is big enough, and strong enough, to stop Julius Malema."
