Table Mountain cable car closed for maintenance from mid-July

Starting from 15 July, tourists visiting Cape Town will not be able to use the cable car to climb Table Mountain.

The cable car will be closed to allow for annual maintenance work to be conducted.

The maintenance shutdown will kick off next month and run until 1 September.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company's managing director, Wahida Parker, said customers will still be able to claim their free birthday rides once repair work is completed.

“If you celebrate your birthday during the seven weeks, we will give you an opportunity to redeem your birthday ticket once we open, which will be on the 2nd of September, and we invite all of you to come and have your free birthday ride.

“As far as cable card holders are concerned, we normally give them an extension on their annual cable card to compensate for the fact that for almost two months, they will not be using their cable cards.”

Several hiking trails at Table Mountain Park are also scheduled to be closed during this period.

Hiking trails from the Kloof Corner to the Platteklip leading up the mountain will be closed.

“Hikers can access the top of the mountain using alternative routes such as the Pipe Track (Kasteelpoort) and the Devils Peak routes,” said Table Mountain's Park Manager Meghan Taplin.

“There won’t be facilities to be able to rescue people that might get stuck on top of the mountain. So, we urge people not to start their trails too late in the day and get into difficult situations or get stuck at the top of the mountain and don’t have a way to come down.”
