Transnet workers embarked on a strike on Thursday after they failed to reach an agreement with the company over wages.

The state-owned ports and railway company dismissed reports that it lost the application to have the strike declared unprotected, and said its submissions on a defective notice period, lack of secret ballot and picketing rules were not dealt with.

National Transport Union President Steven Leshabana says the union is due to meet CCMA commissioners to try and resolve the dispute.

"Tomorrow we are meeting with the CCMA commissioners. So, we will try by all means to resolve the dispute and also the issue of the picketing rules because those people have powers over us even if we were to disagree on the picketing rules the CCMA can impose the picketing rules on us and also sort out the issue of negotiations."

Leshabana adds that the strike will continue as planned.

"People will be on a strike tomorrow even without the picketing rules. Other unions are joining in, Satawu is joining in, so everyone will be on strike making it a total shutdown."
