Tshwane collects R2m amid spike in impounded vehicles
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The City of Tshwane has collected an additional R2 million in revenue after nearly 1000 vehicles were towed in July.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department towed about 1,000 vehicles in one month in the CBD.
Motorists who parked in loading zones, bus lanes, and no-parking areas were towed and fined.
Tshwane MMC for Community Safety Grandi Theunissen says the urge in towing activity highlights improved operational efficiency and professionalism.
"One of the most notable outcomes has been the considerable increase in income generation for the city from impounded vehicles.
"In July 2024 alone, the city impounded 917 vehicles as compared to 270 and 357 impounded vehicles in May and June 2024, respectively, leading to an increased revenue of R2 million for July 2024.
"Additional storage fees are levied against all impounded vehicles that are not immediately collected by their owners, thus contributing to increased revenue."
Theunissen adds that there has also been a decrease in complaints about the conduct of officials at the pound.
"This reduction in grievances reflects the positive impact of the TMPD's focus on accountability, transparency, and professionalism.
"By fostering a culture of responsibility and high standards among staff, the pound now operates with greater integrity."
Theunissen further urged motorists not to listen to informal car guards who might attempt to have them park in illegal areas.
"These informal car guards are quick to disappear once the TMPD tow truck arrives."
