The A Re Yeng bus service, which was suspended some weeks ago, returned to service on Tuesday morning.

The buses were suspended at the end of August after vandals attacked one of the buses.

At the same time, the Tshwane Bus Service was also taken off the road due to the strike by workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union.

Workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) have been on an unprotected strike since July.

The strike has led to an interruption in the delivery of services in the city, including electricity outage repairs, water restoration, and refuse removal.

The city had initially promised to resume the buses on Tuesday, But MMC for Roads and  Transport, Katlego Mathebe, said they are gradually making progress, despite what she described as intimidation and rumours peddled by illegal strike instigators.

"We noticed that most commuters did not pitch at their various Tshwane Bus Service stops. Furthermore, yesterday, some of our personnel, including bus mechanics, reported incidents of threats and intimidation. Such acts of criminality will not be tolerated. The city will now work to ensure that in line with labour practices, disciplinary processes are instituted against those who work against our efforts to serve Tshwane residents.

“The city has also deployed the Tshwane Metro Police Department in various spots to help minimise any potential safety risks," said Mathebe.
