Tshwane mayor hands over houses in Olivenhoutbosch

Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya announced the completion of 447 housing units in Olivenhoutbosch on Wednesday.

The project experienced several delays over the years, starting with the COVID-19 pandemic and extending to the vandalism of sewer connections and the changeover of the contractor.
Moya said the city is currently busy installing 1.5 kilometres of bulk water lines and repairing the internal water and sewer reticulation to the houses.
Including 9 kilometres of road and stormwater drains, four bridges and the installation of 758 water meters.
The completion of the houses is part of the city’s efforts to eradicate its backlog of 30,000 houses.
The beneficiaries are residents from the informal settlements in Olievenhoutbosch.
"In completing these houses, we have provided the bulk infrastructure necessary to turn these houses into homes,” Moya said.
"It is our conviction that we do not simply put up a roof over your head, but we ensure that we build homes with access to potable water, electricity, sanitation, road networks with stormwater drainage.”
She also called on the beneficiaries not to sell or rent out the free government houses.
"I urge you all to treasure and maintain these houses and refrain from selling or leasing them out so that they continue to serve as a foundation for a better life for generations to come. Be a responsible property owner.”
Moya said the Department of Human Settlements conducted a beneficiary verification process to ensure that the correct people occupy the houses.
"We will not hesitate to act swiftly should unlawful occupation be uncovered,” the mayor warned.
