Tshwane mayor to object to massive electricity tariff increases

Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink will write to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to object to massive hikes in electricity tariffs planned for the next two years.

There is growing unhappiness over the energy regulator’s decision to allow Eskom to add an R8-billion “make-up tariff” next year.

The state-run company is also planning to request that Nersa approve a further 36% increase in electricity tariffs in 2025

Brink says electricity is becoming unaffordable for most South Africans.

"We can't put consumers under more pressure. I will be fighting with other municipalities to make sure that the increase that is approved is reasonable.”

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has accepted the DA's request for MPs to debate Eskom's looming electricity tariff increase.

The DA wrote to the speaker earlier this month requesting an urgent parliamentary debate on the increasing cost of electricity in South Africa.

“The debate will interrogate the National Energy Regulatory Authority's decision to allow Eskom to recover an extra R8 billion next year through this ‘make-up tariff’, which it calls a ‘regulatory clearing account’ and which will allow Eskom to collect an extra R8 billion to make up for shortfalls in its revenue in previous years,” said the DA's spokesperson on electricity, Kevin Mileham.
