From early on Wednesday, South Africans were taking to social media to post selfies of their thumbs, indicating that they had voted in the much-anticipated election.
As South Africans headed to the polls on Wednesday, #SAElections2019 was already trending on Twitter by 7am.
To mark the occasion, Twitter automatically generated a voting box emoji for Tweets using the hashtag.
