Two bodies recovered in Stellenbosch dam

The police in the Western Cape have recovered two bodies of a man and a woman from a vehicle in a dam in Paul Kruger Street, Stellenbosch.
The bodies were retrieved from the vehicle on Monday.
Police are unable to confirm their identities as their next of kin still need to be informed.
This comes as two Matie students, aged 18 and 22, who are believed to be a couple, were reported missing on Friday.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says Leila Lees (18) and Ethan Kirkland (22) were last seen at an establishment in Stellenbosch at around 17:00 on Friday.
The pair were driving a maroon Subaru Forester.
Swartbooi says the bodies in the dam were found after a community member spotted an object in a dam and alerted the authorities.
"The local police members responded and secured the scene, when they noticed the wheels of a motor vehicle , which was the only part of the vehicle that was visible.
“The police requested the assistance of SAPS Provincial Diving Unit and upon arrival at the scene, after assessing the circumstances, they retrieved the bodies of the two victims from the motor vehicle. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel," says Swartbooi.
Stellenbosch police have registered an inquest for further investigation.
The police are yet to confirm if the bodies found in the dam are those of the missing Stellenbosch students.
