Two cops in court for attempting to extort money from Bushiri

Two senior police officials are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with an alleged attempt to extort money from self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri.
A 46-year-old brigadier and her 50-year-old husband are expected to appear in court after handing themselves over to the Hawks on Thursday morning.
A warrant of arrest for the pair was issued on Wednesday.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the pair allegedly attempted to extort money from Bushiri to make charges of fraud, theft and money-laundering disappear.
“The pair handed themselves to the team of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation tasked with the investigation of criminal activities relating to Prophet Sheperd Bushiri.
“Their warrants of arrest were authorised yesterday in relation to an amount of R500 000 that was allegedly paid to the brigadier. The investigation started as an Inquiry and it was converted into a case docket in February.”
Government has begun the process to have Bushiri and his wife Mary extradited from Malawi back to South Africa.
The couple skipped bail in November and fled to their native Malawi – claiming they would not receive a fair trial in South Africa.
