Warmer winter predicted for SA due to El Niño
Experts are predicting a warm winter for much of South Africa, attributing it to the lingering effects of the El Niño climate pattern.
El Niño-related climate is characterised by above-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall during the November-April season.
Climate scientist Doctor Peter Johnston told the SABC that the country’s expectations for this winter include higher temperatures and minimum rainfall in some regions.
“El Niño is therefore causing warm air and warm seas, and as a result, we are certainly going to expect a warmer normal winter.
“It doesn’t mean every day is going to be warmer, and it doesn’t mean every single month over winter is going to be warmer, but generally speaking, the forecasts are showing that the temperatures in South Africa over winter will be warmer than normal.”
