The building, which hit the headlines following a blaze which claimed the lives of three firefighters in September 2018, was reduced to dust in a controlled implosion on Sunday morning.

A decision was made to demolish the building after structural engineers declared the building unsafe due to the damage caused by the fire.

Scores of people from surrounding areas were evacuated early Sunday morning and accommodated in the Bank City building as the Bank of Lisbon was demolished.

Residents will be allowed back into their buildings once the clearing and cleaning up of the remains of the demolished building has been completed.

Scores of people gathered to witness the fall of one of Joburg's iconic buildings.

Meanwhile, members of Johannesburg emergency services experienced mixed emotions as they recalled their fallen colleagues who died during the fatal fire.
