Western Cape teacher charged with fraud for identifying as African

A teacher at Grootkraal Primary School in Oudtshoorn, Glen Synman is facing disciplinary action after he identified himself as an African in 2017.
Glen Snyman, who is the founder of an organisation called People Against Race Classification, applied for the position of principal at another school.
On his CV, Snyman stated that he was African instead of his so-called coloured identity.
The Department of Education in the Western Cape subsequently charged him with fraud, a decision which has angered MEC Debbie Schäfer.

"I have learned only today of a WCED teacher who has allegedly been charged with ‘fraud’ for classifying himself as ‘African’ on his CV,” says Schäfer.
“One of the many evils of apartheid was the classification of people by their so-called race. This was what many people have fought to rid our country of. I am understandably shocked to discover that my department is charging someone because of how they choose to classify themselves.
“If this is the case, it is anathema to me. And we will not tolerate victimisation of people who do not conform to an artificial and arbitrary classification of who they are deemed to be.”
