Zuma threatens legal action over ANC expulsion
Updated | By Bulletin / Jacaranda FM
Former president Jacob Zuma’s lawyers have sent a letter of demand to the ANC, requesting the reinstatement of his membership by 31 January.
In November last year, the party’s National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal upheld the committee’s decision to expel Zuma.
The MK Party leader was expelled for bringing the party into disrepute and establishing and leading a rival political party.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation’s spokesperson, Mzwanele Manyi, says they have procedural and substantive concerns regarding the ANC’s processes.
“These issues… highlight irregularities that we believe an independent legal review would likely find invalid. President Zuma has requested that the ANC address this matter and announce his reinstatement by 31 January 2025.
“Should this not occur, he may have no choice but to explore legal remedies to protect his constitutional and contractual rights as a loyal member of the ANC for 65 years.”

Manyi said Zuma is also unhappy about what he believes to be ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula’s unfair treatment of NEC member Tony Yengeni.
Yengeni, who has been critical of the party’s leadership, represented Zuma during his disciplinary hearings.
“This matter extends beyond individual grievances, reflecting deeper concerns about the ANC’s current trajectory,” Manyi said.
There is a growing perception that the organisation is being led by individuals whose actions resemble those of askaris, undermining the movement’s historic mission.
“The alarming trend of selling the organisation’s core principles to the highest bidder has been vividly demonstrated by the so-called government of national unity coalition with the Democratic Alliance and Freedom Front Plus.”
Mbalula announced on Monday that disciplinary action will be taken against Yengeni and Obed Bapela for conduct deemed damaging to the party’s reputation.
Yengeni faces charges for criticising the ANC leadership on social media and supporting the Zuma-led MK Party.
Bapela is under fire for an unauthorised trip to Morocco, conflicting with the ANC’s stance on Western Sahara.
