Female prisoner speaks out during Women's Month
Former drug mule Bongani Mathebula has warned women to steer clear of drugs and friends who are a bad influence.
The mother of two was arrested for drug smuggling and is currently serving a 14-year sentence at the Polokwane Correctional Centre.
Mathebula worked at the OR Tambo International Airport when she was arrested in 2011.
She was found in possession of cocaine after arriving from Brazil.
Jacaranda FM News accompanied Limpopo First Lady Margaret Mathabatha to the prison on Wednesday as part of her Women's Month activities.
She says most women are in prison because of associating with the wrong people.
"Crime doesn't pay. Many are caught in this situation because of other people. My message to young women is stay away from bad people and choose your friends wisely," she said.
Polokwane Correctional Centre manager Dorothy Mokwena says female prisoners with children outside face a great challenge.
"When they are incarcerated their children are left stranded. If they don't have relatives or parents, their children will have no one to take care of them."
