In the centre of Henan, the zoo in the Peoples Park of Luohe replaced wild animals with domestic pets, so says with the state-run Beijing Youth Daily.
It cited a client surnamed Liu who wanted to demonstrate to her young boy the distinctive sounds creatures made – however the creature in the enclosure labelled 'African lion' was yapping, instead of roaring.
The brute was actually a Tibetan mastiff – a huge, hairy type of pooch.
"The zoo is absolutely tricking us," the paper cited Liu, who was charged 15 yuan ($2.45) for the ticket to enter the zoo:
"They are attempting to camouflage the pooches as lions."
Three different species housed also included coypu rodents in a snake's enclosure, a white fox in a panther's nook, and another doggie in a wolf pen.
The head of the recreation center's creature section, Liu Suya, told the paper that while it does have a lion, it had been taken to a reproducing office and the canine – which fit in with a representative – had been briefly housed in the zoo over security concerns.
Clients of China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo administration had harsh words for the zoo.
"This is not amusing whatsoever. It's miserable for both the zoo and the creatures," said one.
"They may as well use a husky to pretend to be a wolf" said another.
