Bafana players ‘need more training, friendlies’
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Former Banyana Banyana striker Portia Modise believes the men’s squad need more time on the training field and additional friendly matches if they are to return to winning ways.
This after Bafana Bafana was once again booted out of the Africa Cup of Nations following a defeat to Sudan in their final qualifier on Sunday.
Bafana lost 2-0 in Khartoum when a draw would have been enough to guarantee a spot in the 2022 Afcon finals in Cameroon.
Modise says friendly games will allow the national squad to gain some momentum.
"We need to give more training camps, we need to do more friendly games. They need more attention and, as much as they are playing at a professional level, but they still need to be monitored in terms of their fitness levels.
"We always believe that some of them play overseas, some play in the PSL, and when we call them into the national team for a week or two. We believe that they will be able to qualify and that is where we are wrong."
Modise, who is the top African female goal scorer of all time, also wants more focus on combinations in the team.
"We still need to find a combination in the team. As much as they are playing in different clubs and some of them playing in the bigger level overseas than the other ones in the PSL, when you give yourself such time, these are the results you get.
"If you prepare your team and you give yourself enough time, you give them friendly games to gel as a team to have that combination and to have that spirit as a team, I think their spirit will be motivated as games come.”
