Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions given green light for mooted PRO16

The Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions will take part in the planned PRO16 competition in the northern hemisphere, it has been confirmed.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Cheetahs confirmed it will not take part in any expanded PRO14 tournament. It has been booted out by SA Rugby’s general council to make way for the country’s four metro franchises.
The Cheetahs has however managed to negotiate its participation as a fifth franchise in a Super 8 competition, which will provide it with additional income.
Harold Verster, managing director of the Free State Cheetahs, says the franchise reserves its rights.
“The implications of the business model have to be assessed and the board will decide on the way forward.”
Verster has also revealed that the Currie Cup is in for another revamp.
“The local competitions are exciting and offer a good prospect because of the fact that it is a competition that all fourteen South-African franchises will be taking part in after which a Currie Cup double round, home and away, will take place with all eight teams.
“Free State Rugby will review all implications and thereafter determine the way forward.”
