It is quite simple ! - Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund must guide the national team to the 3rd Annual Chan Championship in South Africa next year, or face the music.
That's according to Safa Vice President, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, who was speaking at the Local Organising Committee's flag raising ceremony earlier today.
The championship kicks off on January 11 with Bafana taking on neighbours Mozambique in the opening match of Group A and Nonkonyana says they want nothing less than the title.
"Well, as you know, even at club level you can't employ a coach if he doesn't perform. Clearly, if you cant perform then naturally heads must roll and we will give Igesund all the support he needs but if he doesn't produce, we must part ways amicably," said the SAFA official.
"If he doesn't win then he will have to do the honourable thing and announce to the nation that 'Look, I've played my part, I will hand over the job to another person'.
Bafana Bafana hold the embarrassing tag of being the only host country to have crashed out in the group stages of the Fifa World Cup.
Although, they reached the knock out stages in the Afcon earlier this year, they have failed to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil. Winning the Chan Championship would go a long way towards restoring lost pride.
"We must win in 2014," exclaimed Nonkontane. " We are not hosting the tournament for charity, we are sick & tired as administrators of being a laughing stock. Bafana Bafana must be the pride of the nation, but that can only happen once the team starts winning," he added.
"We know that in 2010 we disappointed the nation. Although, we did better in the Afcon 2013, we cant say we are proud. There was an indication that Igesund will take us forward and in 2014 South Africa must bury the stigma of only qualifying by hosting tournament and not doing well.
Only locally-based players plying their trade in their respective leagues may be selected for Chan tournaments. Mali & Nigeria round up Bafana's group.
The tournament features 16 nations, with Cape Town, Mangaung & Polokwane acting as host cities.
DR Congo won the 2009 edition & Tunisia lifted the cup in 2011.
Nonkonyana also said the ticketing committee will meet tomorrow & an announcement will be made shortly on the procedure.
