Goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane will lead Bafana Bafana in their first leg Round 2 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifier against Angola that will be played on Friday, 13 November 2015 at Estadio Nacional de Ombaka, Benguela in Angola.
Kickoff is at 16h30 South African time (15h30 local time in Benguela).
Mabokgwane takes over the number one jersey and captain’s armband from the
injured Itumeleng Khune who was withdrawn from the squad.
The goal minder will have a strong rearguard of
Anele Ngcongca, Thabo Matlaba, Rivaldo Coetzee and Erick Mathoho.
The midfield has a familiar look about it with Mandla Masango, Thulani Serero,
Andile Jali and Bongani Zungu being prefered, while Thamsanqa Gabuza and Tokelo
Rantie will be expected to deliver the goals.
Both Mathoho and Serero have shaken off injuries after sufffering from minor
knocks and missing training on Wednesday.
“This is the big one, it’s the World Cup qualifiers and we are all aware that
if you don’t make it you will have to wait another four years or so. It’s going
to be a high tempo game, a difficult one for both teams. We wont sit back and
hope for miracles, we will attack to try and get goals,” said Bafana Bafana
head coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba.
“We have to go out there and compete. They are playing at home and I don’t
think they will sit back, and they are also aware that if they concede a goal
it’s going to be difficult for them to come back. We need to get a goal so that
when we get home half the work is done. All the past games we have played
together don’t matter, what is key is what will happen on Friday afternoon.”
South Africa and the Palancas Negras will meet again in the second leg on
Tuesday, 17 November 2015 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Kickoff is at 19h00.
