This year’s Games is likely to be the KwaZulu-Natal native’s final Olympics.
Swimming in lane three, Le Clos got off to a fast start, as he was the first swimmer to turn at the half-way point at the 100m mark. But he couldn’t keep up the pace and failed to achieve a podium finish.
World record holder Kristof Milak powered to the Olympic men's 200m butterfly gold medal on Wednesday but complained a tear in his trunks cost him a new global mark.
The 21-year-old Hungarian, who smashed Michael Phelps's world record in 2019, hit the wall in a new Olympic record time of 1min 51.25sec.
Le Clos will now focus his attention on the 100m butterfly heats on Thursday.
