POLL: Who should lead the RWC2015 Boks?
Updated | By Trevor Cramer
Springbok captain Jean de Villiers' Rugby World Cup is over and the Boks have lost an inspirational leader and experienced midfielder.
De Villiers has thankfully been blessed with a core leadership group capable of taking the reins on any given occasion and here is a list of five potential candidates I feel may lead the Boks for the remainder of the Rugby World Cup in England.
The choices are, of course, dependent on form and fitness as well as Bok coach Heyneke Meyer's 'horses for courses' selection policy.
VICTOR MATFIELD
The common cliche' "been there, done that, got the t-shirt" is most applicable to the grey-bearded 38-year-old veteran lock forward.
My most logical choice for the job until the end of the World Cup at least, after which he looks set to hang up his international boots.
Being picked in the captain's role may limit the prodigious talent of Lood de Jager being exposed in this World Cup, but the respect he commands and his intimate knowledge of Bok structures, must make him the favourite.
SCHALK BURGER
Another of the Bok stalwarts playing in his third World Cup, Burger has had limited exposure to the leadership role, but stands behind Matfield in my captaincy queue.
Burger is another player who has stared adversity in the face, having rebounded from a life-threatening illness and has been dubbed "The Incredible Schalk."
His hard man image though has at times made him a target for referees and it might be wiser for Schalk to focus on his primary task, rather than be burdened with the captaincy.
FOURIE DU PREEZ
The former Bulls scrumhalf is a chirpy, positive worker bee and has lost very little of his zip, energy and ability to read a game from the base of the scrum.
He is another World Cup veteran and is familiar with the pressure cooker environment of a World Cup tournament.
DUANE VERMEULEN
Vermeulen's elevation to the Stormers' captaincy last season leaves no doubt as to his leadership pedigree.
His fitness has, however, been an issue in the recent past and one can't help feeling he may be utilised as more of an impact player
during the course of the World Cup.
I feel he has been earmarked as a future Bok skipper, but for now, it may be better for him, much like Burger, to focus on his primary role -his contribution to the team cause.
BISMARCK DU PLESSIS
The Sharks hooker is certainly a leader of men, but his fiercely positive approach to the game is often misconstrued as overly robust.
He has a fair deal of yellow cards and has also seen red on occasion.
My biggest hurdle to appointing Bismarck is that he is not entirely on top of his game right now and has Adriaan Strauss constantly
breathing down his collar for that starting hooker's berth.
That suggests he should focus on nailing down his spot, rather than absorbing the burden of captaincy.
