Mamelodi Sundowns announced the appointment of Miguel Cardoso as the club’s new head coach on Tuesday.
The Portuguese tactician replaces the sacked Mangqoba Mngqithi at the helm.
Kennedy Mweene and Steve Komphela will remain in the coaching setup and form part of Cardoso's backroom staff.
“The introduction of the new coaching technical team was necessitated by the recent unsatisfactory results despite the commitment of the Sundowns Board to give Manqoba Mngqithi and his technical team an opportunity to lead the club going into the future,” Sundowns said in a statement.
The club is currently top of the Premiership, levels with Orlando Pirates on 21 points after eight games.
Cardoso was previously the head coach at Espérance Sportive de Tunis and reached the finals of the 2023/ 24 CAF Champions League.
He joins Sundowns with three of his assistants namely, Fabio Fernandes, Pedro Azevedo and João Araújo.
The Portuguese mentor has extensive European experience, having coached at some of the biggest clubs such as Porto, Braga, Deportivo La Coruna, Celta Vigo, AEK Athens, Nantes and Shaktar Donetsk.
Cardoso’s appointment comes as Sundowns prepare to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Sundowns have been drawn in Group F alongside Brazil's Fluminense, German giants Borussia Dortmund, and South Korea’s Ulsan.
