Rassie Erasmus suspension unwarranted: analyst

Rugby analyst Brenden Nel believes the suspension of South Africa’s director of rugby Rassie Erasmus sends a clear message that World Rugby won’t tolerate any criticism of referees.
Erasmus was slapped with two months suspension after he published a 62-minute video criticising the match officials in charge of the first Test between the Springboks and British and Irish Lions in July.
He was also suspended from all match-day activities until September 30, 2022.
“I think it sends out a clear message to any coach outside that referees are sacred, they should not be questioned, and they won’t tolerate any sort of criticism of referees. Rassie was right on majority of the things he questioned, and they have a problem with the fact that the video went public, and he is being punished.
“I don’t think there will be sympathy from England, Scotland, Wales or Australia, who have been calling for heavy punishment (but) some people in New Zealand have expressed shock and has pledged support to South Africa.
“World Rugby is still run by a bunch of suits in the UK they are very colonialist, very old school thinking and last thing they want is the southern hemisphere to challenge them.”
