SAFA admits it is also to blame for latest Bafana failure
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has admitted that it needs to take a share of the blame for Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2-0 loss to Sudan, and subsequent failure to qualify for African football's showpiece in Cameroon, led to the sacking of head coach Molefi Ntseki.
The governing body admitted on Wednesday that it cannot wash its hands of the debacle.
"The aim was always to qualify,” said SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe.
“We have apologised and we own up. As the association, we failed the nation and you don't apologise if you don't take the blame.
"The national executive committee, when they sent me here, they took the blame and said that we need to apologise to the nation because we know what it does emotionally to the nation."
SAFA president Danny Jordaan did not attend the briefing in Johannesburg.
The football governing body is expected to meet next week to start the search for new coach.
