‘Security concerns’ see CSA remove Teeger as U-19 captain
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Cricket South Africa on Friday announced that David Teeger would no longer captain the SA Under-19 team during the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
The tournament is set to be hosted by South Africa from 19 January.
Teeger came under fire from some quarters for comments supporting the Israel Defense Forces when receiving the “Rising Star Award” at the Jewish Achiever Awards.
CSA cited security concerns for the decision, saying protests related to the war in Gaza are anticipated at the venues for the tournament.
“We have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA Under-19 captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors.
“CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.”
Cricket South Africa said Teeger would remain an important member of the squad.
A new captain will be announced in due course.
