South Africa to face Uganda in Netball World Cup play-off
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Spar Proteas are expected to face Uganda for the second time for Africa dominance in the Netball World Cup 2023 on Sunday.
This comes after the SPAR Proteas’ win against Uganda on Thursday was not enough for them to secure a semi-final spot at the 2023 Netball World Cup underway in Cape Town and as a result, they had to take on Tonga in a play-off match on Friday.
South Africa won the match to 72 - 46.
Tonga is ranked 7th in the world whilst South Africa is 5th.
South Africa will face Uganda for the second time this week for an all-Africa 5th/6th placing at the World Cup and to also determine who is the best on the continent.
In Thursday’s nail-biting match, the Proteas won 52 – 50.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend the final match of the Netball World Cup 2023 and deliver brief remarks at the closing ceremony of the competition on Sunday.
Ramaphosa has called on netball teams and visitors from abroad to make the most of their visit to South Africa.
“As the host nation, we have been honoured to welcome players and supporters from all over the globe and we look forward to an exciting final and the successful conclusion of the tournament.
“Of course we encourage our guests to extend their stay and be inspired in new ways by the many amazing experiences South Africa has to offer.”
