SuperSport lead Pirates in race for prized African spot

Emerging star Thapelo Maseko scored the first goal and created the second as SuperSport United beat AmaZulu 2-1 on Sunday to regain second place in the South African Premiership.
The 19-year-old tapped the ball into the net on 15 minutes and crossed for Zambian Gamphani Lungu to double the lead after 62 minutes in Pretoria.
Bongi Ntuli pulled one goal back for AmaZulu 17 minutes from time, the loss leaving the Durban outfit just three points above the relegation zone with four rounds to play.
SuperSport had surrendered second place behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday when Orlando Pirates came from behind to edge Cape Town City 2-1 in Soweto.
United have 47 points with three matches to play and Pirates 46 with four games remaining in what appears to be a two-club race to join Sundowns in the 2023-2024 CAF Champions League.
Reaching the group stage of the premier African club competition earns a club at least $550,000 (495,000 euros) -- $135,000 more than the Premiership runners-up prize.
Fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs lost ground when they fell 1-0 away to Sekhukhune United in Polokwane and trail SuperSport by six points.
Sekhukhune, in only their second Premiership campaign, completed a double over 2021 Champions League runners-up Chiefs thanks to a fourth-minute goal from Sammy Seabi, his first this season.
At the other end of the table Maritzburg United remain bottom after salvaging a 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Richards Bay through an added-time goal from Genino Palace.
They are one point behind inactive Chippa United and three below Swallows, who suffered a 3-0 hiding at wet and windy Stellenbosch.
Iqraam Rayners netted twice for 'Stellies', bringing his goal tally to 13 in all competitions since a mid-season move from SuperSport, where he failed to score even once.
