SuperSport United climbed one place to second in the South African Premiership table on Tuesday, but coach Gavin Hunt was "distraught" after a 0-0 draw at lowly Marumo Gallants.

"It was a case of two points dropped rather than one gained. I am distraught," said the man who has guided SuperSport three times and Bidvest Wits once to league titles.

Hunt had watched regular scorer Bradley Grobler squander two late opportunities to win a match of few scoring chances in the northern city of Polokwane.

Grobler, second with 10 goals in the race to be the Premiership leading scorer, side-footed wide from close range on 78 minutes.

Five minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty when Ivorian Olivier Toure handled and Grobler blazed his kick over the bar.

SuperSport also came closest to scoring in the opening half as Zambian Gamphani Lungu stretched his left foot to direct a cross toward goal only to be deprived by the post.

United have 44 points, one more than Orlando Pirates, who have played one game fewer, in the chase to finish runners-up and accompany Mamelodi Sundowns into the 2024 CAF Champions League.

At the other end of the table, Marumo rose one place. They are four points above bottom club Maritzburg United but have played two matches more.

"I am fine with one point," said Gallants coach Raymond Mdaka, whose team now travel to Egypt for a CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final first leg against Pyramids on Sunday.
