Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey remains on the critical list, according to family friend and former teammate Kevin Mudie.
The 54-year-old SAFA Technical Director suffered a second heart attack in the space of 18 months on Sunday while cycling.
Speaking to Jacaranda FM News, Mudie confirmed that the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning captain had been taken off a ventilator, but cannot discount fact he remains in a critical condition.
" We are really all holding thumbs he continues to progress," said Mudie.
"He started cycling after his initial heart problem in February last year. He had a stent put in, but we have reason to believe it's an embolism this time."
Mudie, a former professional footballer who lives in Johannesburg and manages the Randburg FC senior amateur soccer teams and is also involved in the club's youth development programme, said Tovey had always adhered to doctor's orders, kept fit and cycled regularly since his last scare.
"We hope an pray that Toves is able to withstand this one and he pulls through."
Meanwhile the twitter sphere has been busy and messages have been pouring in from all over wishing Tovey a speedy recovery.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela were among those who conveyed their good wishes via twitter on Monday.
