Van Niekerk become the first African 400 metre runner in 95 years to win a world championship or Olympic sprint title.
It was not only Van Niekerk's personal best, but also the sixth fastest recorded time in history of 43.48 secs. He alos shattered both the South African and African continental record.
American LaShawn Merritt was second with 43.65, with defending champion Kirani James of Grenada crossing the line in 43.78, for the bronze medal.
